How to Get There: From Moab, travel 32 miles south on U.S. Highway 191 to a sign that says “Needles Overlook” and “Canyon Rims Recreation Area”. (This turnoff is 20 miles north of Monticello on U.S. Highway 191). Turn west and proceed six miles on a paved road to the campground (tent) sign. Turn left into the campground.
Facilities: The walk-in group campsite at Windwhistle is somewhat isolated from the rest of the campground by a large fin of rock. The site is sheltered by a grove of pinyon and juniper trees, and has stunning views of the surrounding sandstone cliffs. The group site has three picnic tables and two fire grills. The campground has trash service and vault toilets. There is drinking water available at the campground from approximately mid-April to mid-October. The closest services are in Monticello, 26 miles away. The Windwhistle Nature Trail, an informative and scenic one-half mile interpretive walk, begins at the group site.
Site Size: Windwhistle Group Site accommodates up to 15 people. The site is intended for walk-in tent camping only. Parking is limited to approximately five passenger cars (no RV parking exists).
Fees: The fee for group camping is $2.50 per person per night. There is a $10.00 reservation fee. Any changes to the location or date of a group site reservation will require an additional $10.00 fee. You must pay for a minimum of ten people.
