Seaman Wash Plateau Herbicide Pilot Study
Picture of Study Area Project Description:
Post fire seeding efforts were made in Seaman's wash in 1989 and 1997 but have not been successful as a result of drought and competition with invasive weeds. Seaman Wash is located in the Seaman Pasture of the Vermilion Allotment and is approximately 20 miles east of Kanab and two miles north of Highway 89. Roughly 600 acres of old seeding require treatment. Because of the presence of cheatgrass, a pilot study is proposed to determine the effectiveness of Plateau herbicide in controlling cheatgrass prior to seeding. Six treatment plots placed among two different cheatgrass densities will be fenced to exclude livestock. In Fall 2005, two seed mixes will be tested to determine the response of all native and introduced species. Treatment with Plateau would be applied in the spring because of the sandy nature of the soils. Baseline monitoring will be completed prior to project initiation and will continue annually following project implementation. Success criteria and contingency plans will be developed to match the site potential and reference conditions.

Current Research/Future Research Needs:
Baseline vegetation data is being collected on the six treatment plots and implementation will happen in November 2005. This project will be monitored annually to evaluate the effectiveness of Plateau herbicide in two different baseline conditions, with two different seed mixes, and without seeding. This project would be an excellent opportunity for someone interested in the effects of this herbicide, which is currently in an experimental status with the BLM.
