Presidential Proclamation, September 1996
The primary purpose for establishing the Monument was to protect the scientific and historic resources described in the Proclamation. In the first 10 years following designation, a main focus of the Soil, Water, and Air program was resource inventory and baseline monitoring. This focus reflected specific management plan objectives regarding resource protection, and also represented the initial phases of establishing a science program and developing tools needed for environmental analysis.
These efforts continue, and are now being complemented by interdisciplinary research and broad-scale syntheses. This poster offers summaries of several ongoing or recently completed projects that will enhance our understanding of natural systems, provide information for use in resource planning and decision-making, and provide context for interpretive presentations.
