Off Highway Vehicle: Suggested Routes

Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument covers 1.9 million acres of public lands insouthern Utah, with over 900 miles of routes available for vehicle travel. Off-highway vehicles (OHVs) are restricted to certain designated roads in the Monument.

Off Road VehicleRoute: Nephi Pasture

Description: A network of roads traversing varied terrain, from sandy, open sagebrush flats to pinion - juniper forests. The Nephi Pasture area features several loop drives with views of Timber Mountain and the White and Vermilion Cliffs. 

Directions: From the traffic light in Kanab, drive about 9 miles east on Highway 89 (to MM55). Turn left onto Johnson Canyon Road. Drive north 9.5 miles and turn right onto Nephi Pasture Road (#556). At the road junction is a large pull-out on the right for parking and unloading trailers. Use caution - this area is extremely sandy.

Escalante Canyons RegionEscalante Canyons

OHV LogoRoute: Fiftymile Bench 

Distance: About 15 miles one way 

Description: Follows the Straight Cliffs high above the desert floor, with vistas of the Escalante Canyons, Henry Mountains, and Glen Canyon. 

Directions: From Escalante, drive southeast on Highway 12 to the Hole-in-the-Rock Road (#200). Turn right and drive south 34.2 miles to Willow Tank Slide Road (#260). Turn onto Willow Tank Slide Road (#260). This route heads up Willow Tank Slide to Fiftymile Bench Road (#290), goes south along the bench, and descends Sooner Slide Road (#280), back to Hole-in-the-Rock Road (#200). Return along the same route. You must trailer ATVs down Hole-in-the-Rock Road and park at the Hurricane Trailhead, 0.25 miles north of the Hole-in-the-Rock / Willow Tank Slide Road junction.

Non-street legal all-terrain vehicles (ATVs) and dirt bikes will be restricted to those routes designated as open for their use. Non-street legal ATVs and dirt bikes will be allowed on approximately 553 miles of the 908 miles of routes designated open to street legal vehicles in the Frontcountry, Passage, and Outback Zones; no routes will be designated open to these vehicles in the Primitive Zone.
