Permits are issued for pinyon pine and juniper trees for ornamental use typically during the early spring months (before trees break dormancy). Digging several shrub and cactus species is also permitted (see table below). Commercial permits and permits that will utilized mechanical tree digging equipment (tree spades, back hoes, etc.) require advance notice by October prior to the spring the permittee wishes to dig to allow sufficient time for archaeological and wildlife clearances to be completed.
