Pine Nuts
Personal-use pine nut collection requires no permit, however, the collection is limited to 25 pounds of nuts per household (or 5 gunny sacks of cones). Amounts exceeding this are handled as commercial sales and do require a permit. All BLM lands in the two county area are open to the public for individual and family use, inclusive of the Indian Peaks commercial area.
Permits for commercial pine nuts are issued typically in August or September when the pine nut crop is about ready for harvest. The Indian Peaks area contains 17 pre-identified harvest units that are offered via a sealed bid auction in August in years when a crop has been produced. Any harvest units that are not sold via the auction are available on a first-come, first-served basis. (link to forestry products map).
