BLM staff Nick Howell and Sherry Roche speak to Southern Utah University students regarding the Bureau's mission and managment approaches at the 2008 Spring Career Fair

Feb 20, 2008 SUU Career Fair

This week the Cedar City BLM enjoyed an incredible opportunity to extend its mission through educational outreach efforts during the semi-annual Career Fair hosted by Southern Utah University on February 20, 2008. Held at the Sharwan Smith Center in the heart of SUU's campus, the number of student and graduate attendees kept all four BLM staff busy throughout the entire event. The team, consisting of Recreation Specialist Sherry Roche, Fire Engine Module Leader Nick Howell (pictured), Public Affairs Officer Rachel Tueller of the Cedar City BLM office, along with Clay Stewart a Recreation Planner from the Grand Staircase Escalante National Monument, shared BLM's mission with more than 80 students. The rapport between BLM representatives and students was positive and the reception to the BLM's message from students, especially those studying in the University's Outdoor Recreation Program, was incredibly amiable. Students and land managers alike shared insights on land management approaches in a mutually beneficial and educational atmosphere. Attendees were also provided leads on two seasonal job opportunities within the Cedar City Field Office as well as helpful, step by step assistance & tutorials on navigating the federal government's application process.

Nov. 2007 State Director Visit, Cedar City

Welcome to the Cedar City Field Office, Bureau of Land Management
The Cedar City Field Office (CCFO) is located in southwest Utah in the Great Basin region.  Characterized by vast acres of sagebrush and pinyon-juniper clad foothills, the region offers a variety of landscapes ranging from salt desert shrub flats to high mountains with riparian, aspen, and bristlecone pine communities.
Principle mountain ranges are the Minerals, the Wah Wahs, and the Indian Peak ranges. The Field Office is home to a variety of species including greater sage grouse, the Utah prairie dog, the Southwest Desert Elk Herd, and the Sulphur Wild Horse Herd a breed of horse noted by its distinct markings and Spanish genetics.

The Field Office is generally quite remote and offers a wide variety of dispersed recreation. The Parowan Gap, a deep, narrow gorge west of Summit, Utah, is renowned as a site of great importance to the Paiute Indians and others for many reasons, including the Fremont era petroglyphs etched on the canyon walls. Acres managed by CCFO and the Southwest Utah Support Area (SUSA) total 5,089,576.9, which CCFO manages for fire, Emergency Stabilization and Rehabilitation (ESR) fuels treatments and a host of other functions for all SUSA offices.
