Input is primarily from WG&F employees, but data is also accepted from other federal biologists and trained staff. Data elements tracked include the species, location, habitat, the activity observed, and the conditions under which the observer is watching (casual vs. standard inventory). Historically the data was entered at the section level, but in 2004 the system was converted to also accept UTM or Latitude/Longitude coordinates, which are preferred for their increased accuracy. Data for each species was selected out and plotted on maps to show the locations of the observations. WG&F staff then delineated boundaries based on the spatial and temporal patterns of the points. Polygons were defined based on clusters of seasonal distribution. Professional judgement was used to fill in any data gaps or incorporate known migration routes to identify the dynamic nature of seasonal range complexes. The definitions for the seasonal ranges are based on the Wyoming Chapter of the Wildlife Society final report dated July 1990. The last time the WG&F went through this process was the mid 1980's. Those data were used as a base map, and the new information was superimposed to reflect necessary updates. The WG&F staff then adjusted the polygons based on the two sets of data.
