The Hulls Gulch ACEC was designated to protect the Aase's onion (Allium aaseae) and its habitat.  Five other ACECs in the Boise-Emmett area were designated for the same purpose.

This ACEC lies within the Special Management Area that contains the Hulls Gulch National Recreation Trail.  It is also within the Boise Front ACEC.
