I like to build my nest or "lodge" on the ground in the mixed woodland or chaparral plant communities of the Table Rocks. I may also build a nest up in a tree. One lodge may be made by several generations of woodrats.

I like to eat green plants, fruit, nuts, seeds, and subterranean fungi. I like to save or cache food in chambers inside my lodge. Frogs, small mammals and other insects also like to live in my lodge. I can have one litter of 1-4 young every year.

If you disturb me inside my house I may chatter my teeth to warn you or rattle my tail against tree limbs.
