Blitzen River Trail
Burns District | OR
Season Dates: 1/1 - 12/31
The Blitzen River Trail takes off from the southern tip of Page Springs Campground at the base of Steens Mountain. The trail follows the Donner und Blitzen Wild & Scenic River upstream to its junction with Fish Creek. The trail itself receives limited maintenance, so expect a variety of conditions ranging from rocky slopes to thick brush to dusty foot paths...and the occasional river crossing when conditions allow (beginning mid-summer). The Blitzen River Trail affords many wonderful fishing spots and stops along the way. If you do fish, please 'catch and release' the beautiful Redband Trout so as to preserve this unique species. Many birds and wildlife are in the canyon - be on the lookout for deer, antelope, cougar and especially the western rattlesnake. If overnight backpacking is in your plan, there are many established primitive camp sites within the canyon.
From Burns, take State Highway 78 southeast for approximately 2 miles. Turn right onto State Highway 205 and travel south for 60 miles to Frenchglen, Oregon. Just past Frenchglen, turn left onto the Steens Mountain Loop Road. Follow the Loop Road for approximately 3 miles before turning into Page Springs Campground to the right, just across the Donner und Blitzen River. The Blitzen River Trail starts off the south end of the campground, directly adjacent to the river.
