Cross Country Skier

During the winter, plentiful snow at higher elevations makes cross-country skiing a run way to tour the monument during winter months. Many cross-country ski opportunities exist in the Hyatt Lake Recreation Area. Just north of the monument boundary, the Buck Prairie Nordic Ski Trails (Nordic Ski Map (PDF)) offer a great way to explore just outside the monument on a well-marked trail system suitable for skiers of all levels.

Snowmobiles

Snowmobiles are a popular way to explore the monument and areas north of the monument during winter months. Snowmobiles are allowed on open roads north of Highway 66. See the Winter Trails Map (PDF) for more detailed information.

Know Before You Go

  • Snowmobiles are not allowed in the south management zone (PDF), on decommissioned roads, or on the PCT.
  • Cross country travel by snowmobiles is not allowed in the monument.
  • Existing snowmobile routes weave in and out of the monument boundary, crossing into private land. Snowmobile trails on private property remain open at the discretion of the landowner.
  • Routes crossing private land can be closed at anytime; continued access depends on your cooperation and willingness to stay on designated routes!
