| Subject: | Extension of Draft Interim Guidance for Survey and Manage Component 2 Species: Red Tree Vole |
On November 4, 1996, "Interim Guidance for Survey and Manage Component 2 Species: Red Tree Vole" was issued to the field to use to implement component 2 of the Survey and Manage Standard and Guideline under the Northwest Forest Plan Record of Decision (BLM Instruction Memorandum No. OR-97-009). This 1996 memorandum contained both the management recommendations (interim guidance) and the survey protocol for the red tree vole.
Since issuance of this memorandum, we have contracted with the USDA Pacific Northwest Research Station (PNW) in Olympia, Washington to conduct general regional surveys for red tree vole habitat in Oregon and to determine if its range extends into California. Through this effort, information is being collected on stand ages and other habitat characteristics relative to red tree vole use. We expect the results to be completed in April 1999. This information will be used to refine the management guidance and the survey protocol.
The red tree vole taxonomic group, including the researcher leading the above PNW survey effort, consider the 1996 protocol and interim guidance suitable for continued use until the study results can be incorporated into the revised documents. Therefore, we are extending the use of the November 4, 1996, memorandum for use through FY 1999 or until superseded by revised official direction.
