Medford, Roseburg, and Salem) and Field Managers (OR: Klamath Falls; CA: Arcata,
Redding, and Ukiah) and USDA Forest Service Forest Supervisors Within the Area of
the Northwest Forest Plan
Subject: Transmittal of Survey Protocol for Seven Survey and Manage and Protection Buffer
Fungi (v. 1.3)

The Northwest Forest Plan requires surveys for certain species of fungi prior to ground-disturbing activities. See Standards and Guidelines for Management of Habitat for Late-Successional and Old-Growth Forest Related Species within the Range of the Northern Spotted Owl where it provides for the conducting of surveys prior to all ground-disturbing activities for Survey and Manage Component 2 (page C-5) and Protection Buffer fungi (pages C-19 through C-20 and C-26 through C-27).

One fungus survey protocol has been transmitted to the field to have a "high likelihood" of finding the species (Bridgeoporus [=Oxyporus] nobilissimus). Attached is the survey protocol (Version 1.3) for conducting surveys for the remaining seven Survey and Manage Strategy 2 and Protection Buffer Fungi: Bondarzewia mesenterica (= B. montana), Otidea leporina, O. onotica, O. smithii, Polyozellus multiplex, Sarcosoma mexicana, and Sowerbyella (= Aleuria) rhenana. Note that this protocol is a narrow exception to the "high likelihood" standard and, as a single survey season protocol, it is not intended to serve as the first year of a multiyear protocol. This protocol is for use only for activities now needing surveys due to reliance on the invalidated November 1, 1996 and September 11, 1998 "implementation" memoranda; for activities within the scope of the FONSI dated February 26,1999, or by subsequent agency decision; or for those activities under court order.
