MEMO and REQUEST FOR RESPONSE

Request for Review of New Information for 7 S&M/PB Fungi Species

I have been asked to query taxa team members who were involved in the April 1998 review of S&M and PB species about new information we may have for these species since the Environmental Assessment (EA) to extend the survey schedule was released in October 1998. There has been a proposal to further extend the survey schedule for 7 of the species you reviewed (7 fungi) that were identified as "infeasible" to survey in the 1998 EA. Part of the analysis for this proposal involves the question of whether a further extension of the survey schedule creates additional risk for these species.

Attached is information from the April 1998 taxa team review and completion of the questionnaire, and from Appendix C of the 10/7/98 EA "To Change the Implementation Schedule for Survey and manage and Protection Buffer Species." Considering this information, please provide written responses to the following questions:

1) Has there been any new information since October 1998 that would change the potential risk to the species (that was addressed in Question #4 in the questionnaire completed by the taxa term)?

If so, would the risk increase or decrease, and what is the basis for this change?

2) Given that the actual timber sale offering in FY 1999 was only one-third of what was expected (245 million board feet was the actual, 740 million was the expected), if we were to complete the expected level of FY 1999 activities without surveys prior to ground-disturbing activities (over approximately the next year), would there be a change in the potential risk to the species over what was anticipated in the original analysis?

If so, would the risk increase or decrease, and what is the basis for this change?

I know you have received numerous similar requests recently, and I apologize in advance for giving you yet another one! Please include other taxa members who were involved in the April 1998 review as you see appropriate, although I know many of them are unavailable at this time. I'd appreciate your response by email or fax. If you have questions, please contact me at 503/808-2673.
