Summary: The Grants Pass Field Manager has issued the Decision Record for the East West Junction Timber Sale. This Decision applies only to the activities associated with the East West Junction Timber Sale which is composed of 155 acres of forest management by Variable Density Thin and Variable Density Retention Harvest on BLM managed lands. The East West Junction Timber Sale Decision includes road renovation/improvements totaling 0.43 miles, temporary route construction totaling 0.20 miles, and route reconstruction totalling 0.28 miles. Temporary route construction and temporary route reconstruction will be decommissioned after use. The activities are analyzed in the East West Junction Environmental Assessment (DOI-BLM-OR-M070-2009-011-EA). The Planning Area (PA) is east and south of the town of Cave Junction. The legal description of the Timber Sale is T39S-R7W-Sections 8, 20, 21; T39S-R8W-Sections 29 and 34; T40S-R8W-Sections 3, 5, 9 in Josephine County, Oregon, Willamette Meridian.

Summary: The Grants Pass Field Manager is proposing forest management activities to implement the Medford District Resource Management Plan (RMP) and to address the primary needs identified for lands in the Planning Area. The project's primary objective is to implement forest management activities that would contribute to continuous timber production while restoring dry and moist forest characteristics and reducing wildfire danger. The RMP directs the BLM to implement the Oregon and California Railroad Revested Lands (O&C Act) which requires the Secretary of the Interior to manage O&C lands for permanent forest production. The proposed activities are analyzed in the East West Junction Project Environmental Assessment (DOI-BLM-OR-M070-2009-011-EA) and preliminary Finding of No Significant Impact (FONSI) prepared by the Grants Pass Resource Area, Medford District, Bureau of Land Management (BLM). The East West Junction Project Environmental Assessment (EA) discloses the predicted environmental effects of 235 acres of Variable Density Thinning, 32 acres of Variable Retention Harvest, 262 acres of Pre-Commercial Thinning, 325 acres of Density Management/Hazardous Fuel Reduction, and 642 acres of Hazardous Fuel Reduction. Associated harvest activities include 0.8 miles of road renovation/improvement, 0.5 miles of temporary route re-construction, and 0.4 miles of temporary route construction, the 0.9 miles of temp routes would be decommissioned after harvest and fuel treatments are completed. Summary: The Grants Pass Resource Area of the Medford District BLM is proposing 359 acres of variable density thinning, 41 acres of variable retention harvest, 385 acres of density management/hazardous fuel reduction, and 463 acres of hazardous fuel reduction for the proposed East West Junction Project. A previous scoping letter for this project was released for public review on December 5, 2008. The East West Junction Project is being revised to focus on dry and moist forest restoration management which would retain trees generally greater than 150 years including legacy trees, oaks, and hardwoods while producing wood for mills and reducing wildfire danger. The East West Junction Project Planning Area is east and south of the town of Cave Junction on federally managed land.
