Accessing the BLM Network via a Laptop Using Cisco VPN and a BlackBerry Smartphone (Tethering)
Assumptions:
- The BlackBerry Desktop Manager must be installed for BlackBerry tethering.
- User turns on the laptop and logs into the network normally to create local login credentials before leaving the office. This step is critical to accessing the BLM network via BlackBerry tethering.
- User must ensure sufficient signal strength at their location to access the Verizon Wireless Network using the Verizon aircard.
Procedures:
- User turns on the laptop.
- User invokes ALT-CTRL-DEL to begin the login process.
- User logs into the laptop with their cached login credentials.
- User acknowledges logging in with their cached credentials by clicking on OK in the User Environment pop-up screen.
- User connects their BlackBerry device into the laptop using the USB cable.
- User starts the BlackBerry Desktop Manager and inputs their BlackBerry device password. User ignores the query for their Lotus Notes password and clicks on Cancel, and then minimizes the Desktop Manager screen. Note: It is critical to keep the Desktop Manager software running because it starts a local service that is needed to allow the BlackBerry device to function as a modem.
- From the Start Menu, All Programs, user clicks Cisco Systems VPN Client, then VPN Client.
- User then double-clicks on BlackBerry Tethering.
- After a few moments the BLM login screen appears. User enters in their userID in the following format: userID@blm.doi.net. User then enters in their network password, and then clicks on OK.
- User acknowledges the standard BLM warning message by clicking on Continue.
- User is now connected to the BLM network via BlackBerry tethering but must click on the shortcut provided by their technician to map their network drives.
