The Omnibus Oregon Wild and Scenic Rivers Act of 1988 designated 33.8 miles of the North Umpqua as a Recreational River in the National Wild and Scenic River System. That same year, it was designated an Oregon State Scenic Waterway by the Oregon Rivers Initiative. To meet designation criteria the river must be free-flowing and have at least one "outstandingly remarkable value" (a unique, rare, or exemplary feature significant at a regional or national level).
