The Buck Rising Variable Retention Harvest timber sale represents the first of two sales analyzed in the Roseburg Secretarial Demonstration Pilot Project environmental assessment (EA). The Secretary of the Interior directed three Bureau of Land Management (BLM) Districts in southwest Oregon to develop Demonstration Pilot Projects for the purpose of illustrating the principles of ecological restoration developed by Drs. Jerry F. Franklin and K. Norman Johnson. It is my decision to authorize the Buck Rising Variable Retention Harvest timber sale, conducting variable retention harvest of 59 acres on Matrix lands, and 19 acres of variable density thinning in Riparian Reserves in Section 17, T. 29 S., R. 3 W., Willamette Meridian.
