Maston Trail Use Area Access and Directions

Cline Buttes Recreation Area

Trailheads

Two trailheads are planned for the Maston Trail Use area:

Maston Trailhead

The main trailhead for the Maston Area is on the north side of Newcomb Road, approximately 3/4 mile east of Cline Falls Highway. The parking area has 24 vehicle spaces and 16 spaces for horse trailers. The area includes short compressed gravel or paved walking paths, a restroom and picnic space.

Newcomb Road is only open to motor vehicle use for two miles east of Cline Falls Highway; access is closed to motorized use except for private property access where the road parallels the Deschutes River. A small parking area for 8 vehicles is planned at the east end of Newcomb Road. The public is no longer allowed to park at the edge of the canyon.

Visitors to Maston share Newcomb Road with private landowners. Please slow down and follow the 25 mph speed limit.

Juniper Trailhead

The smaller Juniper Trailhead will be provided at Cline Falls Highway at the north end of the Maston area. The future trailhead is planned for approximately 15 vehicles. Public motor vehicle travel past the Juniper Trailhead on the Red Cinder Road is not allowed, except for private property access. There is an informal parking area currently at this location for the public to use.

River Access

Public access to the Deschutes River is available on the east side of the river at two locations and three locations on the west side of the river canyon. These access points are as follows.

Jaguar Road Trailhead (East Side of Deschutes River)

Lat: 44.224072°, Lon: -121.250981°

This pedestrian only trail is seasonally closed (2/ 1 - 8/ 31) to all uses to protect nesting raptors. Alternate route in the area during this period: Riverview Trailhead.

No designated parking area currently exists at this location although a small parking area is planned. Meanwhile, please park on the edge of road and avoid private property. This site offers pedestrian only access to several of old routes and roads on the public land above the river canyon, and one well defined, but steep route down to the river. This route will be relocated to a more stable and safe trail alignment in the future.

Riverview Trailhead Site (East Side of Deschutes River)

Lat: 44.212092°, Lon: -121.263683°

This pedestrian only trail is open year round. There are many existing routes and no clearly defined route down into the canyon. Visitors should be careful hiking in this rugged, rocky area.

No designated parking currently exists at the NW corner of the SW Quarry/SW 77th Street Intersection, although there is space for vehicles to pull off on the west side of 77th Street/McVey Avenue approximately 0.1 mile north of this intersection. A small gravel parking area is planned for this site. There is no vehicle access allowed into the CBRA at this point.

Wildcat Canyon Trailhead Site (West Side of Deschutes River)

Lat: 44.210800°, Lon: -121.276651°

This pedestrian only trail is open year round. Trail access into the river canyon currently occurs from the canyon rim at the first powerline crossing of the river. From this point a steep user created trail switchbacks down into the canyon.

No designated parking currently exists; however, the public can park along the edge of Newcomb Road to the west of the fence entrance into the Maston Area. A small gravel parking area is planned for this location. Motor vehicle use north into the Maston area on Newcomb Road is for private property access only. This trail will be rerouted to a more stable and safe trail alignment in the future.

Maston Trailhead Site (West Side of Deschutes River)

Lat: 44.210864°, Lon: -121.302033°

This trail is open year round for hiking, mountain biking and equestrian use. A seasonal wildlife closure is in place for part of this area every year from Feb. 1 - August 31.

This access point is located on Newcomb Road, approximately 3/4 mile east of Cline Falls Highway between Eagle Crest and Tumalo. Parking is available for 16 horse trailers and 24 vehicles

Juniper Trailhead (West Side of Deschutes River)

Lat: 44.244434°, Lon: -121.282137°

Future plans call for a gravel parking lot for up to 15 vehicles and realigned road connection to Cline Falls Highway at this site. This access point is located on Cline Falls Highway, at the Red Cinder Road and near the Cline Buttes Rock Pit Road. Currently, a small parking area exists on the south side of the Red Cinder Road. Motor vehicle travel further east into the Maston area on the Red Cinder Road is not allowed, except for private property access.
