| Summary: The Bureau of Land Management (BLM), Prineville District, Deschutes Field Office is proposing to reduce hazardous fuels and restore vegetation on 800 acres three miles southwest of the town of Tumalo. The Tumalo Ponderosa Pine/Juniper Thinning and Fuel Reduction Project would use a combination of mechanized equipment, chainsaws and prescribed fire to reduce the density of ponderosa pine and young western juniper to improve forest health and reduce the amount of fuel that could carry a wildfire. Treatments would protect existing old-growth trees, promote additional late successional structure, and increase the amount and diversity of understory shrubs, forbs and grasses. Over time, the resulting forest/woodland structure and composition would more closely resemble historic mature ponderosa pine, juniper woodland and shrub-steppe plant communities. The project would also evaluate and modify (close, reroute) existing roads and trails for public recreation/access. | |
