Description:  

This spatial dataset contains linear aquatic habitat reaches ("reaches") and descriptions primarily based on the available Oregon 1:100,000 scale routed hydrography for bull trout within the geographic area depicted by the John Day Basin third field hydrologic unit boundary (HUC). Each reach was defined as such because it has unique aquatic habitat characteristics which separate it from surrounding aquatic habitat, such as temperature, gradient, water quality, etc. These reaches were originally developed in October 2004 as a post-subbasin planning supplemental effort. Bull trout habitat was initially intended to be attributed, rated, and analyzed using the Ecosystem Diagnosis and Treatment (EDT) model in tandem with spring Chinook and summer steelhead analysis. However, subbasin planners identified the need to define the bull trout habitat reaches separately and to use the Qualitative Habitat Analysis model instead (see details below). It is strongly recommended that data users consult the QHA User Guide, http://www.mobrand.com/MBI/services/QHA/default.htm to fully understand the QHA process and attribute definitions presented in this shapefile. An updated version of the user's guide is available through the Technical Outreach and Assistance to Subbasins Team (TOAST; sponsored by the Columbia River Inter-Tribal Fish Commission), which includes information on customizations to the QHA model that are unique to Oregon.
