Travel Management
The UDRMP designated different areas of the CBRA as either Limited to designated roads or trails, or Closed to motorized vehicle use entirely. The majority of the CBRA is limited to designated roads and trails, with an interim system of routes identified for motor vehicle use as shown on the Travel Management Map.
Travel Management Map (PDF)
The area between the Deschutes River and Cline Falls Highway is closed to motor vehicles, with the exception of the Red Cinder ROW road at the north end of this area. The UDRMP identifies the area between Cline Falls Highway and Barr Road (i.e., the Buttes) as being managed for an emphasis on non-motorized trail use.
Likewise, the UDRMP identifies Fryrear Canyon as an area that emphasizes non-motorized trail use. Most of the Cline Buttes area between Barr Road and Fryrear Road and north of State Highway 126 was identified for an emphasis on shared use trails, allowing motorized use.
There are about 178 miles of routes shown in the UDRMP as being available for motorized use (mostly roads of varying conditions). This equals about 3.5 miles of road per square mile of public land. There are many more miles of routes existing in Cline Buttes, most of which are user created trail routes.
Management direction in the UDRMP calls for a diversity of motorized trail use opportunities, particularly in the central and northern portions of the area.
