Concept Map Overview
The following maps, (A, B, and C) show a variety of use areas, trail corridors and general locations for major trail heads. The maps were initially created as stand-alone documents, complete with both text and labels for the most important map features. The information below provides more detail of the concepts being proposed. Currently additional details are still in the development stage, and these concept maps are a means to gather more public input on trails and recreation management in the Cline Buttes Recreation Area.
Key features of the maps are listed below, followed by a description, including location of major access points to trailheads (public land), use areas, and trail management concepts.
Motorized trail emphasis Area (light green) – For comparison between the concept maps, this shows areas that would be managed primarily for people riding/driving quads, 4X4s, and motorcycles. All motorized use will be limited to designated roads, trails, and play areas. Non-motorized users would not be prohibited from using trails within this area, however public input received so far indicates most non-motorized trail users (e.g., hikers, equestrians, runners, mountain bikers) would prefer separate trails or use areas.
Off Highway Vehicle (OHV) play area (dark green stripes) – These small, specific areas would be developed for a variety of motorized uses. These play areas would either 1) allow users to travel anywhere inside a clearly defined zone, or 2) limit users to clearly defined corridors generally wider than trail treads, often allowing multiple lines (typically utilized in rockcrawling areas to navigate an obstacle). Most Cline Buttes play areas are envisioned to provide 1) an easy warm up area where riders/drivers enjoy the freedom of picking their own route or 2) a highly technical challenge not available within the designated trail system.
All Trail Corridors (all dashed lines) – These conceptual trail corridors indicate where a trail or trails might be located.
Class 2 OHV trail (dark green dashed line) – Class 2 OHVs include SUVs, pickups, and jeeps. Class 2 OHV trails would also allow motorcycle and quad use, and would serve as the easy/novice trail loops throughout the OHV use area.
Class 1 and 3 OHV trail (purple dashed line) – These trails would be primarily designed for motorcycles and quads, allowing vehicles up to 50” in width. Some “single-track motorcycle trails” would be provided, however no motorcycle-only trails are currently shown on any of the concept maps.
Equestrian trail (light green, big dashed line) – These trails would be managed for equestrian and pedestrian use only.
Mountain bike trail (medium green, small dashed line) – These trails would be managed for bicycle and pedestrian use only. Like OHV trails, these trails would be developed to provide a range of difficulty levels.
Pedestrian trail (blue dashed line ) – These
trails would be managed for pedestrian use only. These are proposed
within and along the Deschutes River. General areas for pedestrian
trails are also depicted in a portion of the Tumalo Canal Area
of Critical Environmental Concern (ACEC) and on a portion of Cline
Buttes near Eagle Crest Resort.
Shared use trail (brown dashed line) – Shown in the south-central portion of the planning area in Concept C, but additionally considered along powerline service roads in the Maston Plateau area, these trails would accommodate shared use by bicycles, horses, and pedestrians.
