Cline Buttes Recreation Area Plan
Concept Map CThe Cline Buttes Recreation Area is managed for a variety of trail uses. Non-motorized trails are provided in the largest acreage of all concept plans, and include the use of Fryrear and Dry Canyons, the Dusty Loop area and most of the Peck's Milkvetch ACEC. OHV's would be allowed to access the top of buttes, and would also utilize the area east of Barr Road, to help compensate for the loss of opportunities elsewhere. OHV trails may be at higher density within the smaller use area- and this concept would place the greatest emphasis on reducing road miles to achieve a trail system at the lowest density possible. This concept may call for reduced public use of ROW roads. Maston Area:The Red Cinder Road is gated, a trailhead is located near Cline Falls Hwy. A larger trailhead is located off Newcomb Road, which is open to motorized vehicles until it enters BLM close to the Deschutes River. A variety of hiking, mtn biking and horse trails are provided in the Marston Area. Trails are kept away from the canyon rim in the central portion of the area due to wildlife concerns. A large shared use (mountain bikes, equestrians, and pedestrians) non-motorized trail system is proposed for the southwestern portion of the area. A hiking/biking specific trailhead is provided for the buttes. Trails are designated for horses on the middle buttes and for mtn biking on the south buttes. Larger trail loops are proposed, but are dependent on trail easements or links on State Land, the FAA withdrawal, and or private property. The 4,100 acre Maston Plateau area lies between Cline Falls Highway and the Deschutes River, and between Newcomb Road to the south, and Eagle Crest Resort to the north. Designated solely for non-motorized trail use in the UDRMP; the area would have a designated trail network created for pedestrians, equestrians, mountain bikers, and access to the Deschutes River. Two small isolated parcels of BLM extend east of the Deschutes River. These parcels are located at the west end of Jaguar and Quarry Roads; they would provide pedestrian-only access and trails to the Deschutes River. The 5,380 acre Buttes area is bordered by Highway 126 to the north, Barr Road to the west and south, and by Cline Falls Highway to the east. The buttes area was designated for an emphasis on non-motorized trail use in the UDRMP, although it was not specifically closed to motorized use. Under all concepts, the Buttes would provide access and trails for pedestrians, equestrians, and mountain bikers. The 7,600 acre area north of State Highway 126 includes lands to the east and west of Buckhorn Road . This area was identified in the UDRMP for motorized use, on designated roads and trails. Under Concept B, the area would provide opportunities for all types of motorized trail uses (Class I, II, and III), and also for equestrian/pedestrian trails on the northwest plateau (if legal access for a trailhead is available from surrounding roads). Excluding the Canyons area (see next section), the Central Plateau area can be roughly defined by Highway 126 to the north, Barr Road to the east, Innes Market Road to the south, and Fryrear Road to the west. Under Concept C, this area would provide access and trails for motorized users, pedestrians, mountain bicyclists, and equestrians. This area is located adjacent to Fryrear Road, and includes Fryrear Canyon, Dry Canyon, and Deep Canyon south of State Highway 126. In Concept B, the Canyons would provide trails for motorized users in Deep and Dry Canyons, with non-motorized use trails in the western portion of the area, which includes Fryrear Canyon . | ||
