Cline Buttes Recreation Area Plan
Concept Map BThe Cline Buttes Recreation Area is managed for a variety of trail uses. Non-motorized trails area provided in the Maston area, the Dusty Loop area, and a portion of the Canyons area along Fryrear Road (Secondary Wildlife Emphasis Area). Maston Area: The Red Cinder Road is open to the public, in order to access a river trailhead and Interpretive trail. A trailhead is located near Cline Falls Hwy. The major trailhead is located off Newcomb Road. The eastern half of Newcomb Road is gated and closed to motor vehicles. A variety of hiking, mtn biking, and horse trails are provided in the Maston Area. Trails are kept away from the canyon rim in the central portion of the area for wildlife concerns. Separate trailheads for hikers/mountain bikes vs. horses are provided for access to trails on the buttes. Horse trails are provided on the middle butte, mountain bike trails on the south butte. Longer trail loops are proposed, but depend on trail links or easements on State Land, FAA withdrawal lands, or private property. OHV routes are located throughout a large portion of the area, including Dry Canyon. Barr Road serves as a boundary for OHV use. A pasture fence may be relocated to run along Barr Road to help define the different use areas. The map shows the concepts and proposals for Concept B (click map to enlarge), below the map are the areas affected and a brief description about each area. The 4,100 acre Maston area lies between Cline Falls Highway and the Deschutes River, and between Newcomb Road to the south and Eagle Crest Resort to the north. Designated solely for non-motorized trail use in the UDRMP, the area would provide access and trails for pedestrians, equestrians, mountain bikers, and access to the Deschutes River . Two small isolated parcels of BLM lie east of the Deschutes River , but within the Maston area. These parcels are located at the west end of Jaguar and Quarry Roads; they would provide pedestrian-only access and trails The 5,380 acre Buttes area is bordered by Highway 126 to the north, Barr Road to the west and south, and by Cline Falls Highway to the east. The buttes area was designated for an emphasis on non-motorized trail use in the UDRMP, although it was not specifically closed to motorized use. Under all concepts, the Buttes would provide access and trails for pedestrians, equestrians, and mountain bikers. The 7,600 acre area north of State Highway 126 includes lands to the east and west of Buckhorn Road. This area was identified in the UDRMP for motorized use, on designated roads and trails. Under Concept B, the area would provide opportunities for all types of motorized trail uses (Class I, II, and III), and also for equestrian/pedestrian trails on the northwest plateau (if legal access for a trailhead is available from surrounding roads). Excluding the Canyons sub-area (see next section), the Central Plateau area can be roughly defined by Highway 126 to the north, Barr Road to the east, Innes Market Road to the south, and Fryrear Road to the west. Under Concept B, this area would provide access and trails for motorized users, pedestrians, and equestrians. This area is located adjacent to Fryrear Road, and includes Fryrear Canyon, Dry Canyon, and Deep Canyon south of State Highway 126. In Concept B, the Canyons would provide trails for motorized users in Deep and Dry Canyons, with non-motorized use trails in the western portion of the area, which includes Fryrear Canyon . | ||
