What Land is Affected
The Cline Buttes Recreation Area (CBRA) planning boundary includes 32,000 acres (50 square miles) of BLM administered land in Deschutes County, Oregon.
The outer edge or boundary of this area totals about 60 miles. The CBRA is located five miles west of Redmond, five miles east of Sisters, and nine miles north of Bend. Thus, the area is centrally located within the fastest growing urban area in the State of Oregon. The Cline Buttes Recreation Area represents about 8 percent of the BLM managed lands within the UDRMP area.
The High Desert Special Recreation Management Area Map (PDF) shows the location of the 32,000 acre Cline Buttes Recreation Area, and the relationship of this area to the cities of Bend, Redmond, Sisters, etc. and the other recreation areas identified by the BLM in Central Oregon.
There are approximately 4,650 acres of private land inholdings within the Cline Buttes Recreation Area. These private parcels are scattered throughout the area in more than 20 separate parcels that comprise 15 percent of the Cline Buttes land area. The interior boundary or edge of these parcels is about 47 miles.
Most of the lands on the Buttes themselves are in private ownership (Eagle Crest Phase 3, Cline Buttes Rock Pit, and the proposed Thornburgh Resort). A 160 acre parcel of State land is also located on the buttes. The decisions in the Cline Buttes Recreation Area plan do not include private or State land, other than any specific agreements for road or trail easements that are cooperatively reached during the planning process.
The Cline Buttes Recreation Area is roughly bordered by Fryrear Road to the west, State Highway 20/Innes Market Road/Newcomb Road to the south, and the Deschutes River to the east. No roads form the immediate northern boundary of the area. Several major public roads bisect the recreation area, including State Highway 126, as well as the following Deschutes County Roads: Barr Road, Buckhorn Road, and Cline Falls Highway.
