Areas of Critical Environmental Concern
The UDRMP identified two ACECs in the Cline Buttes Recreation Area, and they are shown on the Cline Buttes Area of Critical Environmental Concern (ACEC) map. The 1,055 acre Tumalo Canal ACEC is located between Cline Falls Highway and Barr Road, immediately south of the proposed Thornburgh Resort.
The general management direction for the ACEC includes:
- Management for an emphasis on interpretation of historic values
- Harvesting of wood products and special forest products not allowed
- Limitations on mineral material mining

The core, fenced portion of the ACEC will be identified as part of the Cline Buttes Recreation Area design. This area would be managed for a pedestrian, interpretive trail. Designations of equestrian or mountain bike trails are allowed in the ACEC, but only to the extent needed to provide trail links across the area.
The 10,042 acre Peck's Milkvetch ACEC occupies the southwestern third of the CBRA. It is an expansion of the original boundaries of the ACEC and was designated to encompass the entire known range of the plant within the planning area. Management direction for the ACEC, as provided in the UDRMP, is to manage uses so as not to impair Peck's Milkvetch populations or its habitat. This includes:
- Limitations on off road use of vehicles for administrative use.
- Limiting motorized use by the public to designated roads and trails.
- Prohibition on the use of prescribed fire.
- Livestock grazing prescriptions.
