The BLM is extending the scoping period for the Sampson Cove Forest Management Project due to the inaccessibility of many of the proposed Sampson Cove units due to snow, road conditions, and gates. Please submit your written comments by June 4, 2010 to Kristi Mastrofini, Sampson Cove Forest Management Project, Medford District BLM, 3040 Biddle Road, Medford, OR 97504.

The BLM will host two field trips to review portions of the Sampson Cove proposed project. This is an opportunity for the public to review and discuss examples of the proposed silvicultural treatments with BLM staff and to view units off of the Cove Creek road system that are inaccessible to the public this time of year. The field trips our planned for May 11 and June 3, 2010. Please R.S.V.P. if you plan to attend.

Environmental Assessment DOI-BLM-OR-M060-2010-0024-EA Planning Completed
The Sampson Cove Forest Management Project Environmental Assessment (EA) is available for public review. The public review period ends on August 9, 2010. The 504-acre Sampson Cove Forest Management Project would thin trees in conifer forest stands on BLM-administered lands in the Walker Creek, and Upper and Lower Emigrant Creek drainages of the Upper Bear Creek Watershed. Forest management would be accomplished using a combination of timber sale and service contracts, and would also include unit-specific activity fuels treatments and pre-commercial thinning. About 500 feet of new road construction is proposed, in addition to an estimated 45 miles of existing roads that would be used as haul routes and improved as needed to meet BLM standards. This Environmental Assessment will provide the information needed for the responsible official, the Ashland Resource Area Field Manager, to select a course of action to be implemented for the Sampson Cove Forest Management Project. All comments should be made in writing and mailed or delivered to Sampson Cove Project, Kristi Mastrofini, Ashland Resource Area, 3040 Biddle Road, Medford, OR 97504.
