Summary: The Decision Record for the Mackin Gulch Young Stand Management Project will implement forest management activities analyzed under the Speaking Coyote Project Environmental Assessment (EA) (DOI-BLM-OR-M070-2012-0002-EA). The Mackin Gulch Project will treat 37 acres in a managed plantation. The project consists of stocking level control, with the potential to extract firewood, posts, poles, and/or small sawlogs. Activity fuels will be treated after the forest management treatments are accomplished. The objective is to reduce conifer stocking, improve stand vigor and growth, while capturing the value of the biomass and excess sawlogs. It is intended to provide economic opportunities to the local community by offering a small scale stewardship project. The Mackin Gulch Young Stand Management Project is located in the Grants Pass Resource Area in the Grave Creek fifth field watershed on BLM administered lands in Township 33 South, Range 6 West, Section 34; Willamette Meridian; Josephine County, Oregon.

Summary: The London Peak Timber Sale was analyzed under the Speaking Coyote Project Environmental Assessment (OR-M070-2012-0002). Commercial harvest unit 27-1 was previously harvested in the 1960s, planted, and currently a tree plantation. The Environmental Assessment (EA) determined that Unit 27-1 was located on stable ground suitable for harvest activities. However, during timber sale layout it was discovered that approximately 3 acres of the 17 acre unit were incorrectly mapped as Fragile Nonsuitable Woodland Slope Gradient (FGNW). The proposed action is to correct the mapping error under the RMP. The RMP provides that "Potentail minor changes, refinements or clarifications in the plan may take the form of maintenance actions" (RMP, p. 94).

Summary: A Decision Documentation is available on the Speaking Coyote Timber Sale which is composed of 818 acres of commercial thinning and 14 miles of roadway for daylighting maintenance. Road work to facilitate the transport of logs is 2.6 miles of new temporary routes would be constructed and 0.21 miles of existing temporary routes re-constructed. These routes would be decommissioned after use. These activities are analyzed under the Speaking Coyote Project Environmental Assessment (DOI-BLM-OR-M070-2012-0002-EA).

Summary: The Grants Pass Field Manager is proposing forest management activities on BLM managed forest land as analyzed within the Speaking Coyote Project Environmental Assessment (DOI-BLM-OR-M070-2012-0002-EA). The Speaking Coyote Project Planning Area is located near the communities of Wolf Creek and Sunny Valley. The Proposed Action would commercially thin approximately 818 acres and remove vegetation on approximately 14 miles of roadway as daylighting maintenance. To facilitate timber harvesting activities there would be 2.6 miles of new temporary route construction and 0.21 miles of temporary route re-construction.

Summary: The scoping report for the proposed Speaking Coyote Project is available for public comment and review. The Speaking Coyote Project is located on the Grants Pass Resource Area, Medford District, Bureau of Land Management (BLM) near the communities of Wolf Creek and Sunny Valley. The Speaking Coyote Project includes approximately 1,115 acres of proposed commercial thinning in overstocked conifer stands and approximately 20 miles of roadway daylighting maintenance. There are approximately 35 conifer stands which range from 30 to 130 years of age. The majority of harvested timber will be from 7 to 30 inches diameter at breast height (DBH). A paper copy of the Speaking Coyote Scoping Report is also available beginning December 15, 2011 and ending January 11, 2012 at the Grants Pass Interagency Office, 2164 NE Spalding Avenue, 97526.
