| Summary: This decision documentation applies only to activities associated with the Cheney Slate Timber Sale which is composed of 140 acres of forest management by density management/modified group select and group select on BLM managed lands. In order to access units for treatment, 0.16 miles of temporary route construction and 0.10 miles of temporary route re-construction are needed across three short spur routes that will be decommissioned after harvesting and activity fuels reduction is completed. The activities of the Cheney Slate Timber Sale are analyzed under the Cheney Slate Landscape Management Project Environmental Assessment (EA# OR117-08-01). Two of the Cheney Slate Timber Sale units are located 3 miles east of the town of Murphy and three units are a few miles outside the town of Wonder. The legal description is Township (T.)37S., Range (R.)5W., Sections 14 & 23; and T.37S., R.7W., Sections 5, 13, 19 in Josephine County, Willamette Meridian, Oregon. | |

| Summary: In July 2009, the Grants Pass Resource Area completed an environmental assessment (EA) for the Cheney Slate Landscape Management Project and distributed it for review and comment. The decision is to defer the majority of the commercial timber harvest including all the regeneration harvest and hardwood conversion, and implement other stand harvest and post harvest treatments as outlined in Alternative 2. All riparian harvest and road construction is also deferred under the decision. Noncommercial activities would also be completed, including up to 136 miles of road maintenance, 333 acres of young stand management, 592 acres of habitat restoration and enhancement, 3,100 acres of fuel hazard reduction, construction of 4 miles of recreation trail in the Bolt Mountain area and 122 acres of young stand treatments in riparian reserves. | |
