Evans Creek Forest Management Project

Welcome to the Evans Creek Forest Management Project. We hope this site will provide you with up-to-date information on the planning process and how you can be involved.

The Medford District's Butte Falls Resource Area has resumed the environmental analysis process for forest management and watershed restoration activities in the Evans Creek watershed. Outreach for this project began in fall 2007 and was delayed in 2008 to allow the BLM to salvage trees blown down during winter windstorms.

The 143,350-acre Evans Creek watershed, located in southern Oregon, lies north of the Rogue River and Interstate 5 near the city of Rogue River. Land ownership in the watershed is intermixed, with the BLM managing 59,300 acres or about 41 percent of the watershed.

The Evans Creek Forest Management project will look at the possibility of implementing forest management and watershed restoration activities on 3,325 acres of BLM-administered lands located throughout the watershed.

The purpose of this project is to:

supply a sustainable harvest of forest commodities on matrix lands to provide jobs and contribute to community stability;
restore ecological characteristics and sustainable conditions in the forests and the landscape of the watershed;
decrease the potential risk of wildfire within the watershed; and
reduce the potential for sediment production and sediment delivery to streams.

What's Next

The BLM received two letters protesting our decision to implement Alternative 3 from the Evans Creek Forest Management EA. Klamath-Siskiyou Wildlands Center, Cascadia Wildlands Project, Oregon Wild, and Siskiyou Project submitted protest letters containing their concerns over portions of our project decision and timber sale decision. We will reconsider our decisions in light of their statement of reasons for the protests and provide them our responses to their protest points and decisions based on the merits of their protests.
