Wildhorse Lake Steens Mountain Summit Area
1 ½ miles July-October Not suitable for horses. Steep, slippery, dangerous cliffs. Not maintained. Please no campfires at the lake (fragile alpine environment). 2 designated campsites at the lake. Highlights: High elevation lake in a hanging valley, surrounded by alpine wild flowers. Look for the Steens Mountain paintbrush, endemic to the mountain.
Little Blitzen Gorge South Steens Area near South Steens Campground
Approximately 8 ½miles June-October Maintained on a limited basis. The river is difficult to cross in early season. First good campsites 3 miles up canyon. Highlights: A pristine U-shaped gorge created by glaciers. Look for numerous waterfalls cascading from the canyon rim.
Big Indian Gorge South Steens Campground - Family Loop
Approximately 8 miles June-October Maintained on a limited basis. Three creek crossings are difficult in early season. Highlights: A mostly level walk through large aspen stands and open meadows. Look for shady cottonwood groves bordering Big Indian Creek.
High Desert Trail Begins at Denio Canyon near Nevada border, south of Fields, Oregon
240 miles Some sections all year. May encounter snow at the higher elevations. Contact the Desert Trail Association, P.O. Box 34, Madras, OR 97741 or visit www.thedeserttrail.org. Highlights: The Desert Trail is not an actual trail but a "corridor," with outstanding opportunities for solitude, wildlife watching, and a diversity of scenery.
Sage Hen Nature Trail Sage Hen Rest Area, Hwy 20 West
½ mile Spring-Fall Maintained trail with benches. Self-guiding brochure at site. Highlights: Look for views of Steens Mountain, Palomino Buttes, and Harney Valley. A good hike for children.
Steens Summit Steens Summit Area
½ mile July-October Follows closed road to Steens high point. Highlights: Outstanding views of Wildhorse Canyon and the Alvord Desert.
Blitzen River Page Springs
4 miles to Fish Creek Outlet All year A "fishing path." Hikers may need to cross river at times to avoid cliffs and rocks. River difficult to cross in spring. Highlights: A challenging but beautiful hike through a deep winding river canyon. Look for deer and many types of birds.

From Burns, Oregon, take U.S. Highway 20 west for approximately 32 miles to milepost 100, and turn right onto the Chickahominy Reservoir entrance road.

From Burns, take State Highway 78 southeast for approximately 2 miles. Turn right onto State Highway 205 and travel south for 60 miles to Frenchglen, Oregon. Just past Frenchglen, turn left onto the Steens Mountain Loop Road. Follow the Loop Road for approximately 3 miles before turning into Page Springs Campground to the right, just across the Donner und Blitzen River.

From Burns, take State Highway 78 southeast for approximately 2 miles. Turn right onto State Highway 205 and travel south for 60 miles to Frenchglen, Oregon. Just past Frenchglen, turn left onto the Steens Mountain Loop Road. Travel approximately 17 miles on the Loop Road before turning right into Fish Lake Camprgound.

*Limited parking for large Rvs available at Fish Lake. Average parking area is 20 feet, with 3 sites available for trailers longer than 30 feet.

From Burns, Oregon, take State Highway 78 southeast for approximately 65 miles. Turn right onto the East Steens Road and travel southwest for approximately 24 miles until you reach the Mann Lake Recreation Site turn-off on you right.

**Trailers and Recreational Vehicles (RVs) not recommended in Jackman Park.

Continue on State Highway 205 through the town of Frenchglen, and up ‘P’ Hill. Travel approximately 9 miles, then turn left on the Steens Mountain Loop Road south entrance. The turnoff to South Steens Campground is just over 18 miles from State Highway 205.

From Burns, take State Highway 78 southeast for approximately 2 miles. Turn right onto State Highway 205 and travel south for 60 miles to Frenchglen, Oregon. Continue on State Highway 205 through the town of Frenchglen, and up ‘P’ Hill. Travel approximately 9 miles, then turn left on the Steens Mountain Loop Road south entrance. The turnoff to South Steens Campground is just over 18 miles from State Highway 205.

From Burns, take State Highway 78 southeast for approximately 2 miles. Turn right onto State Highway 205 and travel south for 60 miles to Frenchglen, Oregon. Just past Frenchglen, turn left onto the Steens Mountain Loop Road. Travel approximately 19 miles on the Loop Road before turning right into Jackman Park Camprgound. Jackman Park is located just 2 miles past Fish Lake Campground.
