The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) is proposing to gather approximately 361 and remove approximately 265 excess wild horses from within and outside the Warm Springs Herd Management Area (HMA) beginning about November 2010. The purpose of the action is to return the wild horse population to within the established AML within Warm Springs HMA, protect rangeland resources from deterioration associated with the current overpopulation, maintain a thriving natural ecological balance and multiple-use relationship on public lands in the area consistent with the provisions of 1333(b)(2)(iv) of the WFRHBA and to maintain Rangeland Health Standards.

It is my decision to implement the capture and removal of excess wild horses in the HMA as described in the Proposed Action. The Proposed Action is to capture approximately 361 wild horses in the HMA and all horses outside Warm Springs and remove 265 excess horses. All returned mares would receive Porcine Zona Pellucida (PZP) treatments. There would also be 10 geldings returned to achieve minimum AML.
