Steens Mountain Area Road Maintenance Activities
Date: 9/2/09
The Burns District Bureau of Land Management (BLM) conducted road maintenance and improvement activities on Burnt Car, Tombstone, and other routes near the South Steens Loop Road. All roads are located within the Steens Mountain Cooperative Management and Protection Area. An internal fact-finding team reviewed the actions during the week of August 17 and developed a report. The objective of the review was to establish the facts and assemble a chronology of events leading up to and during the road maintenance activities. The team's final report concluded the work did not meet some of the BLM's requirements and procedures. The BLM Burns District has started work to restore and rehabilitate the affected roads. An Environmental Assessment will be completed and BLM will be working closely with the local community and key stakeholders throughout the process. Please see the links below to view the full report, a map of the area, and news release. For further information, contact Burns District BLM at 541-573-4400 or by email.
