Project Title: Umpqua Basin Fish Passage Restoration

Description:
Habitat restoration is needed to support the Endangered Species Act listed Oregon Coast coho salmon and other aquatic species in the Umpqua Basin. The project entails replacing seven large culverts in five different areas outside of Roseburg in Douglas County. The projects will restore more than three miles of habitat access for the coho salmon and improve the road infrastructure.
Recovery Act Funding:
Agreements have been established with local watershed councils (the Partnership for the Umpqua Rivers and the Elk Creek Watershed Council). These organizations will manage all aspects of the projects, including advertising, awarding, and administering the construction contracts. Work will begin in the summer of 2010 and will continue for the next into September 2010. Contractors with heavy equipment and knowledge of road construction can bid on the projects will be needed to complete the construction.
Benefits:
This project will allow coho salmon to access historically important habitat for spawning and rearing as well as support habitat for steelhead and cutthroat trout, and Pacific lamprey. In addition, the existing culverts are near the end of their functional lifecycle. The new structures will be be at far less risk of washing out during high stream flows.
