Index Map Locator #: 50

Spokane District Map

State: Oregon

Unit: BLM - Spokane District

Description:

This project will correct safety and health deficiencies identified during the 2008 Compliance Assessment Safety Health Environment (CASHE) audit of BLM facilities in the San Juan Islands. It also includes repairs to the historic Turn Point barn roof. The CASHE audit corrective actions include securing and eliminating public access to several confined spaces; protecting and securing a historic well; sampling for and abating soil contaminants, including lead and petroleum; sampling debris from a demolished and buried building; correcting electrical wiring deficiencies in a historic structure; completing repairs to improve safety in several historic structures; improving emergency communications; and surveying and remediating for lead-based paint in several historic structures. These projects have been prioritized to complete those items that are of immediate public safety concern in the next three to six months. Projects requiring survey and sampling will begin within 3 months and extend up to 18 months.

Recovery Act Funding:

Work will be accomplished through contracts – particularly using local, small businesses, creating jobs for 10 to 15 people, and starting within three months with project completion within 18 months.

Benefits:

This project will improve the visitor experience at popular recreation sites on the San Juan Islands by correcting recently identified safety concerns.  In addition, the roof on the barn at the Turn Point Light Station is leaking and some of the structural members are deteriorating; repairs include replacing the roof, gutters, and structural supports. The roof repair will restore and extend the life of the facility, used for an on-site museum, and bring it to a condition that meets acceptable standards. These projects are located within a National Icon area. Most of the project work is within National Historic Register buildings/complexes.
