ARRA Project (WBS)#: LXABH0510000
Project Title: Abandoned Mine Short Term Remediation
Index Map Locator #: 21
State: Oregon
Unit: BLM - Medford District
Description:
This project will mitigate the physical dangers and address water quality concerns related to abandoned mines while protecting bat habitat. The Medford District has 155 known abandoned mine sites that present a physical danger. Many of these sites have easy access from roads and trails and could cause physical harm to the public if appropriate safety measures are not in place. Additionally, some of the mining sites are known to be home to bats and any actions must preserve their habitat.
Recovery Act Funding:
The Medford District will use funds to purchase and install grates over the entrances to dangerous mines.
Benefits:
Where bats are present, the grates will allow for bat movement while preventing small children from entering. Five of the mines require water quality restoration. The Medford District will evaluate the sites and determine the best mitigation practices to ensure water quality standards are met.
