ARRA Project (WBS)#: LXABH0490000
Project Title: Almeda Mine
Index Map Locator #: 19
State: Oregon
Unit: BLM - Medford District
Description:
The Medford District will conduct an evaluation of the internal rock structure to assess the potential engineering solutions in controlling acid mine drainage from the former Almeda Mine, located near Galice, Oregon on the Rogue River.
Recovery Act Funding:
These funds will be used to complete an evaluation of the Almeda Mine and associated follow-up work.
Benefits:
The work includes the excavation and shoring of an adit, supply and installation of mine reinforcement materials (including a galvanized, corrugated steel pipe), transport of wastes to a repository, and the installation of a metal locking grate on the adit opening. There will be an on-site settling pond where muck and acid mine drainage can be neutralized before flowing through limestone-filled trenches. The existing limestone rock in the trenches will be replaced with fresh rock to further aid the neutralization of the effluent from the adit. The older rock will be placed in an existing trench near another adit.
Follow-up work will include engineering evaluations on how to control the acid mine drainage, a potential in-situ treatability study to neutralize the acid mine drainage, and potential remediation work in future years if engineering and chemical studies warrant. The Statement of Work has been prepared and the project is slated to start in the summer of 2009.
