ARRA Project (WBS)#: LADFR0960000
Project Title: Shotgun Park Waterline Replacement
Index Map Locator #: 7
State: Oregon
Unit: BLM - Eugene District
Description:
This project would remove and replace the existing 6” asbestos-cement transite waterline in the Shotgun Creek Recreation Area with 6” high density polyethylene (HDPE) pipe, or equivalent, to eliminate the hazmat maintenance issues and reduce the prohibitive maintenance cost. This transite potable waterline provides water for the Shotgun Recreation Site which is a day-use fee site, open 8 months of the year with an estimated 12,000 visitors per year. It also provides water to the host site, and to the administrative site which houses the offices for our recreation maintenance employees. The pipe has a history of damage and it is expected that damage will occur again in the future if it is not replaced. Due to the material the pipe is made from (asbestos-cement transite) and the subsequent hazmat issues, repair/maintenance is very costly and time consuming, potentially significantly affecting site visitors if water became unavailable should the line be damaged. The Eugene District Safety Officer has prohibited BLM maintenance personnel from making repairs because of the hazardous risks associated with the asbestos-cement pipe.
Recovery Act Funding:
In addition to project design and installation, this cost also includes the removal and disposal of the existing transite pipe by a hazard materials specialist.
Benefits:
By replacing the pipe with an HDPE pipe or equivalent, maintenance activities, when needed, will be both less costly and simpler, and could be accomplished by BLM maintenance staff. In addition, potential loss of potable water would be eliminated/minimized reducing potential impacts to recreationists, employees and site volunteers.
