ARRA Project (WBS)#: LADFR0850000
Project Title: Green Mtn. Lookout - Replacement
Index Map Locator #: 14
State: Oregon
Unit: BLM - Lakeview District
Description:
The Green Mountain Lookout was originally constructed in the late 1960s and has been heavily utilized since that time. Natural deterioration of the facility has been compounded by vandalism and rodent damage. The existing building contains multiple structural deficiencies and safety hazards. Its floor joists are failing, structural beams are fractured, railings are loose, decking is cracked, propane and water delivery systems are inoperable, windows and solar panels contain bullet holes, insulation is insufficient, and grounding of the tower and telecommunication equipment is inadequate.
Recovery Act Funding:
This project involves the replacement of the lookout structure, improvement of the access road, installation of a radio repeater and construction of a trail to the adjacent campground. The observation platform will be elevated several feet above its current level. The road used to enter the site will be relocated to limit public access.
Benefits:
The Green Mountain Lookout is the first line of wildfire defense for much of the surrounding wildland urban interface. The new building will eliminate existing safety and structural hazards. Elevating the observation platform will provide better visual coverage of the adjacent area for detecting and monitoring wildland fire incidents. Moving the road to limit public access will help protect the tower and its supporting infrastructure.
Updates:
The project is currently out for bid. The work is anticipated to be completed by fall 2010. The lookout will be operational for the 2011 fire season.
