Public Observation Opportunities

Call the Wild Horse Gather Info Line at (775) 861-6700 for designated guided public viewing dates. Unescorted public viewing is available for the duration of the gather. Members of the public should contact Lesli Ellis, public affairs specialist, at (775) 753-0386 or by email lellis@blm.gov for maps.

Where to meet: On guided observation days (To be determined), meet BLM personnel at the Elko District Office (directions are below). There will be a short briefing for the day and introductions.

Transportation: All visitors must have their own transportation – we cannot take people in government vehicles except in an emergency. The roads to the viewing area are very rough and dusty. Vehicles MUST HAVE 4-wheel drive with high clearance. Visitors must have spare tires. The closest gas and vehicle services are available in Elko, Nev.

Due to the distances involved within the Complex and the lack of facilities, extra gas cans are highly recommended though not mandatory. There is spot cell phone coverage in the Ruby Valley area. BLM personnel will ensure services are provided to stranded visitors during guided observation days.

Driving Directions to Elko, Nevada: From Reno, follow I 80 West and drive approximately 289 miles to Elko, Nev. Take exit 303 – Elko East. Turn right onto E. Jennings Way, then take the 1st left to Idaho St. The District Office is located a little less than a mile on the right at 3900 E. Idaho St. before the DMV.

Weather conditions: This is Nevada in August, so plan for extremely hot temperatures, possible thunderstorms and flooding, and windy conditions at the gather site. Dressing in layers is recommended due to highly fluctuating temperatures throughout the day.

Physical Activity: On guided observation days, viewing areas might not be located close to roads. There will be some hiking involved.

Observation Areas: Observation areas are determined to provide the best vantage point while ensuring a safe and effective gather operation. Once areas are determined by the contractor and BLM staff, they cannot be moved during that day’s gather operations.
