BLM NEVADA’S ENVIRONMENTAL MANAGEMENT SYSTEM

An Environmental Management System (EMS) is a framework to systematically identify and reduce impacts on the environment.

The BLM is committed to implementing an EMS to:

  • Continually improve operating procedures
  • Integrate environmental considerations into all operations
  • Comply with legal and other requirements
  • Prevent pollution
  • Carry out a continual cycle of planning, implementing, reviewing, and improving processes and actions to meet organizational and environmental goals

The BLM Nevada EMS provides a mechanism for evaluating and pursuing environmental management improvements across all areas and programs overseen by the BLM Nevada. BLM Nevada is implementing an EMS to strengthen its existing commitment to the protection and reclamation of the public lands.

Why Do EMS:

On October 5, 2009, President Barack Obama signed Executive Order (EO) 13514, “Federal Leadership in Environmental, Energy, and Economic Performance” “. . . to establish an integrated strategy towards sustainability in the Federal Government and to make reduction of greenhouse gas emissions a priority for Federal agencies . . .”

        • Invasive Species Management
        • Illegal Dumping/Waste Removal
        • Recycling, Reduction and Reuse
        • Land Health Across the Landscape

FY 2011 accomplishments include:
  • Invasive species awareness and management training for BLM district staff
  • Creating better linkages between BLM law enforcement officers and hazardous waste staff to target critical illegal dumping sites throughout the state
  • District-led illegal dump site clean-ups with local communities resulting in removal of tons of waste and education about protection of public lands
  • Recycling and pollution reduction actions including:
    • Partnering with White Pine County to provide recycling containers to communities throughout the county
    • Replacing ink toner printers with less polluting “wax toner” printers
    • Providing recycling bins throughout BLM offices to encourage recycling by employees and visitors
    • Designing and building LEED-certified visitor centers at the Red Rock and Black Rock National Conservation Areas
