Secretary of the Interior Approves $4.3 Million For Fuel Reduction Projects at Lake Tahoe
Secretary of the Interior Dirk Kempthorne has approved approximately $4.3 million for new/ongoing hazardous fuels reduction and restoration projects at Lake Tahoe.
The projects include the Lake Tahoe Basin Prescribed Fire Under Burn Project, South Shore Ecosystem Restoration and Hazardous Fuel Reduction, and Lake Tahoe Urban Forest Restoration and Fuels Reduction, Phase 3 of 4. The projects areas encompass Forest Service-managed parcels interspersed throughout the Lake Tahoe community.
“Implementation of these fuels reduction projects is critical, not only to protect residents of Lake Tahoe but help improve the overall health of the surrounding forests,” said Kempthorne. “The Department of the Interior remains committed to protecting this extraordinarily special area.”
The expenditures are authorized through the Southern Nevada Public Land Management Act (SNPLMA) of 1998 (as amended), and generated from the sale of public lands identified for disposal in the Las Vegas valley. The funds facilitate a broad array of restoration and improvement projects at Lake Tahoe, in Clark, Lincoln, and White Pine counties, and to a limited extent in Washoe and Douglas counties and Carson City.
