Winnemucca District Continues Fuelbreak Maintenance

Winnemucca, Nev. – The Bureau of Land Management (BLM), Division of Fire/Aviation-Vegetation Management, will be implementing maintenance on fuelbreaks around the communities of Winnemucca and Grass Valley this fall.

These treatments are part of the Winnemucca Wildland Urban Interface project, a series of fuelbreaks designed to protect homes and infrastructure from wildand fire. Various treatments, which include mowing, seeding, and the application of herbicide, will be applied as needed to maintain fuelbreak effectiveness throughout these areas.

“Winnemucca is a nationally recognized ‘community-at-risk’ because of its close proximity to wildland fuels,” says Mark Williams, Fire Ecologist at the Winnemucca BLM. “Fuelbreak maintenance treatments reduce fire intensity and slow the fire’s spread to facilitate suppression and containment of wildland fires.”

General locations of the fuelbreak treatments are: 1) Winnemucca Mountain – Jungo Road to Sage Heights, 2) East Winnemucca – Bloody Shins Trailhead to Water Canyon Road, and 3) Grass Valley – east of town along the foothills of the Sonoma Range. (Map of Affected Areas)

If the public has any questions regarding these treatments, please contact Mark Williams, Fire Ecologist, at (775) 623-1748.

The BLM's mission is to manage and conserve the public lands for the use and enjoyment of present and future generations under our mandate of multiple-use and sustained yield.
