BLM Mojave-Southern Great Basin Resource Advisory Council to Meet

Ely, Nev. – The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) will meet with the Mojave-Southern Great Basin Resource Advisory Council (RAC) at 9 a.m., Thursday, July 11, at the Nevada Department of Wildlife Office, 4747 Vegas Drive, in Las Vegas, Nev.

The RAC advises and makes recommendations to the BLM on public land management. Discussion items will include, but are not limited to, energy and transmission, and resource management planning. The meetings are open to the public and provide the public an opportunity to make comments to the citizen-based council. A public comment period is scheduled at 11:00 a.m.  The public is encouraged to attend and provide comment. Written comments can also be submitted to the RAC Coordinator, Chris Hanefeld at the Ely District Office, 702 North Industrial Way, HC 33 Box 33500, Ely, NV 89301.  The agenda is available online at http://www.blm.gov/nv/ under “In the Spotlight.”

The Federal Land Policy and Management Act directs the Secretary of the Interior to involve the public in planning and discussion of issues related to management of BLM-administered public lands.  The Mojave-Southern Great Basin RAC is one of three such councils in Nevada that accommodate this community participation directive. Represented on the council are commercial and non-commercial users including environmental, livestock, mining, Native American, and wild horse and burro interests and elected officials and state agencies.

The BLM manages more than 245 million acres of public land, the most of any Federal agency. This land, known as the National System of Public Lands, is primarily located in 12 Western states, including Alaska. The BLM also administers 700 million acres of sub-surface mineral estate throughout the nation. The BLM's mission is to manage and conserve the public lands for the use and enjoyment of present and future generations under our mandate of multiple-use and sustained yield. In Fiscal Year 2013, the BLM generated $4.7 billion in receipts from public lands.
