Elko District hosts Burned Area Rehabilitation Tour

ELKO, Nev.—The Bureau of Land Management (BLM), Elko District Office is hosting its fourth open communications forum July 13 to provide an opportunity for the public to learn more about projects being undertaken by the Elko District as well as an informal question and answer forum. These forums are designed to maintain an open dialogue between the BLM and the many users of America’s public lands.

The topic for this forum is a tour of rehabilitated fire areas including the 2006 Susie Fire, the 2011 Indian Creek Fire, and the 2005 Esmeralda Fire. At each stop on the tour, there will be a presentation on treatments along with an opportunity for the public to ask questions.

The forum is open to the public and will begin at the BLM, Elko District Office located at 3900 E. Idaho St. at 8 a.m. However, viewers may attend the selected areas they wish, and come and go as they please. The entire tour is expected to last until 2:30 p.m. and travel to Carlin, Tuscarora and Battle Mountain.

Viewers are encouraged to bring a high clearance vehicle with at least all-wheel drive due to the terrain and the dirt and gravel roads. Attendees are asked to bring a sack lunch and water. Reservations are not required, however it is suggested to sign up by calling Lesli Ellis at (775) 753-0386.

The BLM manages more than 245 million acres of public land, the most of any Federal agency. This land, known as the National System of Public Lands, is primarily located in 12 Western states, including Alaska. The BLM also administers 700 million acres of sub-surface mineral estate throughout the nation. The BLM's mission is to manage and conserve the public lands for the use and enjoyment of present and future generations under our mandate of multiple-use and sustained yield. In Fiscal Year 2013, the BLM generated $4.7 billion in receipts from public lands.
