Northeastern Great Basin Resource Advisory Council to Meet Sept. 20
ELKO, Nev.--The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) Northeastern Great Basin Resource Advisory Council (RAC) will hold a meeting on Thursday, Sept. 20 at the Battle Mountain District Office. Members of the public and media are cordially invited to attend.
The meeting will take place at the Battle Mountain District Office located at 50 Bastian Road, Battle Mountain. RAC members will meet in the parking lot of the District parking lot at 8 a.m. for travel to the Shoshone OHV Trail. After briefs at the trailhead, RAC members will travel back to the District Office for the remainder of the meeting.
Agenda items for discussion include: Recreation Travel planning and implementation, upcoming and past Wild Horse and Burro gathers and possible creation of a state Wild Horse & Burro subcommittee.

In accordance with the Federal Land Policy and Management Act and the Federal Advisory Committee Act of 1972 (FACA), the U.S. Department of the Interior, Bureau of Land Management formed 24 RACs in the western States to provide advice on the management of public lands and resources. These citizen-based groups provide an opportunity for individuals from all backgrounds and interests to have a voice in the management of the public lands, and to help improve their health and productivity. RAC recommendations address all public land issues, including: land use planning, recreation, noxious weeds, and wild horse and burro herd management areas.
The BLM manages more than 245 million acres of public land, the most of any Federal agency. This land, known as the National System of Public Lands, is primarily located in 12 Western states, including Alaska. The BLM also administers 700 million acres of sub-surface mineral estate throughout the nation. In Fiscal Year (FY) 2011, recreational and other activities on BLM-managed land contributed more than $130 billion to the U.S. economy and supported more than 600,000 American jobs. The Bureau is also one of a handful of agencies that collects more revenue than it spends. In FY 2012, nearly $5.7 billion will be generated on lands managed by the BLM, which operates on a $1.1 billion budget. The BLM's multiple-use mission is to sustain the health and productivity of the public lands for the use and enjoyment of present and future generations. The Bureau accomplishes this by managing such activities as outdoor recreation, livestock grazing, mineral development, and energy production, and by conserving natural, historical, cultural, and other resources on public lands.
