BLM and Alpine County Opens Fire Area to Public Woodcutting near Indian Creek Recreation Area and the Alpine County Airport

Carson City, Nev. - The Bureau of Land Management (BLM), Carson City District and Alpine County is opening the Airport Fire area to public woodcutting on Friday, October 5, 2012. This fire burned 81 acres of BLM and Alpine County land during the 2011 fire season.

The fire/woodcutting area is located near the Indian Creek Recreation Area and the Alpine County Airport along Airport Road. Permits sell for $10/cord and will be available as supplies last, weather permitting. The area usually receives winter snows that often block vehicle traffic into the area. Permits can be purchased from the BLM office in Carson City at 5665 Morgan Mill Road and the Alpine County Chamber of Commerce in Markleeville, Calif., at 3 Webster Street.

A map and stipulations are attached to the permit. Hazard trees near the road have already been dropped but will have to be further cut and bucked up by permittees for loading and removal. The agency feels that this wood will not last long, so potential buyers should move quickly.

For more information, please contact the Carson City BLM office at 775-885-6000.

The BLM manages more than 245 million acres of public land, the most of any Federal agency. This land, known as the National System of Public Lands, is primarily located in 12 Western states, including Alaska. The BLM also administers 700 million acres of sub-surface mineral estate throughout the nation. In Fiscal Year (FY) 2011, recreational and other activities on BLM-managed land contributed more than $130 billion to the U.S. economy and supported more than 600,000 American jobs. The Bureau is also one of a handful of agencies that collects more revenue than it spends. In FY 2012, nearly $5.7 billion will be generated on lands managed by the BLM, which operates on a $1.1 billion budget. The BLM's multiple-use mission is to sustain the health and productivity of the public lands for the use and enjoyment of present and future generations. The Bureau accomplishes this by managing such activities as outdoor recreation, livestock grazing, mineral development, and energy production, and by conserving natural, historical, cultural, and other resources on public lands.
