BLM Urges Public Awareness of Wildfire Danger Due to High Winds and Dry Conditions

The Bureau of Land Management (BLM), Carson City District would like to remind the community to be aware of the increased chance of wildfire late Wednesday night through Thursday afternoon due to extremely dry conditions and increasingly windy conditions predicted as a storm approaches the area. Although a winter weather advisory is in place in some areas, due to the persistently dry conditions the BLM is urging the public to be vigilant on private and public lands.

“For those who remember, these conditions are similar to those which preceded the Caughlin Fire nearly one year ago and the Washoe Drive Fire last January,” said Shane McDonald, BLM Fire Management Officer.” “We encourage everyone to be careful in regards to human-caused fires and take appropriate steps to prevent them. In fire danger situations such as the Red Flag Warning we will be under, we rely heavily upon the public to make sensible decisions in regards to fire.”

To date, there have been 29 human caused fires and 27,442 acres burned on BLM managed public lands within the BLM Carson City District. There have been 163 human caused fires and 70,594 acres burned on BLM managed public lands within Nevada.

The BLM manages more than 245 million acres of public land, the most of any Federal agency. This land, known as the National System of Public Lands, is primarily located in 12 Western states, including Alaska. The BLM also administers 700 million acres of sub-surface mineral estate throughout the nation. In Fiscal Year (FY) 2011, recreational and other activities on BLM-managed land contributed more than $130 billion to the U.S. economy and supported more than 600,000 American jobs. The Bureau is also one of a handful of agencies that collects more revenue than it spends. In FY 2012, nearly $5.7 billion will be generated on lands managed by the BLM, which operates on a $1.1 billion budget. The BLM's multiple-use mission is to sustain the health and productivity of the public lands for the use and enjoyment of present and future generations. The Bureau accomplishes this by managing such activities as outdoor recreation, livestock grazing, mineral development, and energy production, and by conserving natural, historical, cultural, and other resources on public lands.
